100% of Human Need
Posted July 31st, 2008 by adminWhen people are making decisions of where to invest their volunteer and philanthropic support, they often begin with issues that matter most to them. Many of these issues are areas of need that appear to be a single issue problem at first glance: hunger, homelessness, domestic violence, basic medical care—crisis needs. It’s easy to see why you’d approach giving and volunteering this way; these are very personal choices, often motivated by personal experience, and the need is painfully obvious.
But the emergency is a human emergency, not a crisis caused by just one area of desperation. The woman who escapes domestic violence might seek temporary housing in a homeless shelter, and might receive food assistance from a foodbank. She is a person in crisis who is escaping domestic violence, who is now also homeless, hungry, and possibly in need of affordable health care. And to get back on her feet she might need the assistance of a counselor, some financial literacy training, job skills training, and quality affordable child care. She is one person with many emergency needs, but also needs the support of programs to change her life situation for good.
This is the genius of United Way; it is a single organization that works in partnership with many different partner agencies to treat people holistically to help them move out of crisis and into a healthy, independent and stable life.
United Way convenes resources and support from the non-profit world, the business world, faith based organizations, civic entities and individuals from the community to tackle the tough problems our community faces, improving the quality of life for everyone in the Valley.
Your one gift to United Way reaches widely to touch people in all kinds of different situations, and it’s doing it in an effective and efficient way. It’s why your gift to United Way is one of the most powerful ways you can invest: it’s the best way to help the most people.
